Emma Raducanu – What’s in store for 2022?

Like Leicester in the Premier League in 2016 or Greece in the Euro’s in 2006, sport conjures up some unfathomable moments that you wouldn’t dare to dream of. But the reason you attend and love sport is that the unexpected can happen and anything is possible at the start of a match, tournament or league.

The latest is Emma Raducanu, the incredible teenager who thoroughly deserved and outplayed her opponents through her three week journey, which included a number of qualifiers to win the US Open. She became the first qualifier in the Open era to reach a Grand Slam final, eventually winning it against fellow young star Leylah Fernandez, without dropping a set the entire tournament.

Raducanu’s performance at The Championships, Wimbledon in 2021 bought her plenty of media spotlight as she battled her way to the fourth round, a huge jump from any of her achievements in her young career. Unfortunately she retired against Ajla Tomljanovic at Wimbledon due to a mixture of exhaustion and health issues, but it was a clear sign of what was to come from the Bromley player.

This major breakthrough for British sport has added a new fire into tennis in the country and 2022 could be an outstanding year for Raducanu. With that in mind, we have recently gone on sale for Wimbledon 2022 and demand is already extremely high for the world’s most prestigious tennis tournament.

British Tennis

The United Kingdom historically has always been associated with tennis and classy tennis hospitality with Wimbledon showcasing the most iconic tournament in the world, you’d be forgiven for thinking that we hold a long list of singles Grand Slam legends, especially in the post-war era. The women’s game have had success in the 60’s and 70’s with Ann Haydon, Virginia Wade and Sue Barker picking up 7 Grand Slam’s between them. But finally, British tennis has a new superstar as Emma Raducanu sensationally won the US Open in 2021 against all the odds, coming through the qualifiers and not even dropping a set! The wait for a men’s singles British Grand Slam champion in recent times was even longer with Fred Perry’s dominance in the 1930’s the last successful period to admire. Scotland’s Andy Murray made history when he finally secured the US Open title in 2012 before his memorable Wimbledon triumph in 2013 against Novak Djokovic. Both moments when people will forever ask ‘where were you when…’.
