Rugby Hospitality
The Rugby season typically runs for 11 months of the year and there are hospitality opportunities throughout. There is a combination of International, European and Club rugby. International Rugby has three major events throughout the year. Consisting of the Autumn Internationals, Guinness Six Nations and a International Summer Tour.
Autumn Internationals
The Autumn Internationals are held throughout November where a host nation plays 2 to 3 of the big Southern Hemisphere powers. New Zealand, South Africa, or Australia. Then 1 or 2 lesser Nations which could be Tonga, Samoa, Japan, or Argentina. The makeup of the Autumn Internationals are 4 standalone ‘friendly ‘fixtures. Friendly in the loosest sense as these games are anything but friendly. Played at the highest intensity as bragging rights for the victor are highly prized.
The Guinness Six Nations
The Guinness Six Nations in the Spring is the highlight of the Northern Hemisphere Rugby calendar. Originally the five Nations (no Italy) the competition started in 1931 consisting of the following teams. England, Wales, Scotland, France, Ireland. Italy joined in 2000 when the tournament moved into its current format. Playing each team once, either at home or away (on alternative years). The competition is in a league format and therefore the team with the most amount of points at the end are champions.
International Rugby – Summer Tour
At the end of the International calendar there will be a summer tour. The Northern Hemisphere teams will travel to either Argentina, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa for a three test series, consequently these fixtures are always at the highest intensity. A series win away from home are exceptionally hard to come by.
Lions Tours
The final International event which occurs every 4 years is the Lions Tour. This is where the Home Nations (England, Wales, Ireland, and Scotland) combine their best players into a 41-man squad to tour Australia, New Zealand or South Africa in rotation. In the summer of 2021, The Lions are touring South Africa who are the current World Champions. Therefore, it is truly the pinnacle of International Rugby and is the ultimate accomplishment for any Rugby player. Especially a successful one.
