2021/22 Manchester United v Liverpool

Manchester United

Manchester United is commercially one of the biggest football clubs in the world as well as showcasing a fantastic history of winning trophies. They play at Old Trafford, the biggest stadium in England associated with club football, holding a spectacular 74,000 spectators. The Red Devils have won the most league titles in English football history, overtaking Liverpool in recent times and under the great Sir Alex Ferguson, dominated two decades between 1990 and 2010.

Old Trafford has been in the hands of Manchester United since their formation in the early 1900’s, but the stadium was bombed during world war two, with very little structure left to work with. A league game was not played there for 10 years until 1949 the stadium was fully able to host football, with 41,000 fans in attendance. The ground then began to develop in 1951 and continued to increase to the size and stature it is now.

The stadium has hosted some major events over the years, including Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen and Rod Stewart, as well as a huge fight in boxing as Chris Eubank fought Nigel Benn in 1993.

Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson in the 1990s were a special team and largely dominated the league, winning multiple titles. The youth team were responsible for the future success for Manchester United as Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and more came through to play in the same team and win their first title since 1967 in 1993. Since then they never looked back, winning 8 of the last 11 Premier Leagues, attracting stars such as Eric Cantona, Andrew Cole, Jaap Stam and Peter Schmeichel.

Where are the team now?

With Sir Alex Ferguson signing off with a league title in 2013, the team haven’t been able to mirror their success and are on a drought from major silverware. A few managers have come and gone but former player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is currently at the helm and starting to build a title challenging team. The team finished 2nd in 2021 and went to the final of the Europa League, losing to Villareal on penalties. Bruno Fernandes has taken to the Premier League like duck to water and has drove the team to a new level, supported by Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba.
