The England Cricket teams tour of Sri Lanka

England’s Cricket team start their year in Sri Lanka which has been voted one of the most beautiful places in the world to play cricket. Unfortunately it will also be recognised as one of the toughest as the pitches are renowned for deteriorating early and becoming a spinner’s dream. Historically, when the great Muttiah Muralitharan had the ball in hand it could easily be an English batter’s worst nightmare.

Sri Lanka in South Africa

Sri Lanka will be arriving home only days before the first Test Match gets underway. Flying in from South Africa where the Protea’s completed a comfortable sweep of the two-match series when they knocked off a target of 67 on day 3 of the Test Match on Tuesday.

Sri Lanka showed signs of what they are capable of throughout the two-match series however they rely to heavily on Captain Dimuth Karunaratne who notched up his 10th Test century in the second test (Johannesburg), Dinesh Chandimal 85 (Pretoria) and Dhananjaya de Silva 79 (Pretoria). In order to be successful abroad they will need runs from their top 5 batters and wickets from their front line bowlers taking away the dependency on the spinners.

The England Cricket team toured Sri Lanka back in 2018 where for the first time in 30 years England managed a series whitewash abroad, claiming the series 3-0. Noticeable performances from Keaton Jennings (100) and Jos Buttler (100) gave the platform for the bowlers to work from. England took three spinners on the last tour and I expect they will look to use the same blueprint to come away with another series win.
