Latest From the Premier League

All 20 teams have now played 8 games and the Premier league is heating up. We have seen a fair share of drama so far and long may it continue throughout the season. Along with having some of the greatest players, the unpredictability of the Premier league makes it the best league in the world.

Manager Watch

The Premier League season always provides twists and turns throughout the season. We have already seen Watford manager Xisco Munoz get given his marching orders after being sacked by the Watford board after just 10 months in charge, this didn’t come a surprise to many as Watford have had 17 managers in the last ten years. The man to take the reins at Watford is ex Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri. Watford fans will be hoping he can replicate the miracle he produced when in charge of Leicester.

Staying on the topic of football managers, the inevitable has happened, Steve Bruce’s time as Newcastle manager has come to an end after Bruce departed Newcastle by mutual consent. The departure is due to Newcastle consistently underperforming but mainly down to the change in ownership of the club. The takeover brings an end to Mike Ashley’s 14-year spell as Newcastle United owner. The billion-pound takeover aims to resurge Newcastle’s hopes for titles and silverware, their last major trophy was the FA Cup in 1955.

One man who’s future is constantly in doubt is Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. With a group of talented individuals he can’t seem to galvanise his side. After a ambitious transfer window in the summer, Manchester United were dubbed favourites to take the Premier League crown. So far they have showed signs of inconsistency in their first eight games and the manager has come under fire from various football pundits. Will Ole be at Old Trafford come the end of the season? Only time will tell.

Manchester United v Liverpool: One to Watch

This fixture is one of the fiercest in the Premier League. This weekend both teams go head-to-head in an important Premier League battle. Manchester United have won just one of their last 10 Premier League meetings with Liverpool, drawing 6 and losing 3. After Liverpool got the better of United with a convincing 4-2 victory at Old Trafford in May, they are looking to secure consecutive league victories at Old Trafford for the first time since January 2002.

The current Manchester United team have not really been hitting the heights that many expected so far this season. With the return of Ronaldo and positive additions in the form of Sancho and Varane, you would have thought they would be sitting higher than 6th, four points behind their opponents on Sunday, Liverpool.

View From the Top

Chelsea currently lead the way at the top of the table with 18 points, Stamford Bridge is proving to be a difficult place to get a result for teams at the moment. Top will be playing bottom at the Bridge this weekend as Norwich City make the trip to London, in which will be a huge task for them.

Liverpool are only a point behind the leaders Chelsea, with a convincing 5-0 win over Watford and an entertaining win against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League they will be looking to continue this fine form, however the challenge at hand is a big one with the massive game at Old Trafford this weekend.

A team that has surprised the Premier League so far this season is Brighton. Brighton are currently in the top four on 15 points, but it is a long season and I can’t see them holding this position throughout the season. Brighton come up against the team who are above them in the table, Manchester City. Last years champions are currently sitting in third, as they have proved over a number of seasons now, they can be rampant, ruthless and relentless on their day. Manchester City are brimming with talent this season with De Bruyne, Phil Foden, Bernado Silva and the addition this term of Jack Grealish, they are a team who can punish any side.

Tottenham Hotspur, who with the team they have should really be pushing higher up in the league. This has been the tale of past seasons for Spurs and it is looking like the same story so far this season. Harry Kane got off the mark against Newcastle last weekend scoring his first goal in the Premier League this season, can he be instrumental for them this season amid all the transfer talk which surrounded him in the summer?

Looking Down the League

A team that are morphing into mid table regulars of late are Arsenal. Arsenal have gone from top 4 contenders in previous years to a mediocre mid table outfit. Their draw with a revitalised Crystal Palace under Viera at the Emirates Stadium on Monday just showed how far they had really fallen. Palace capitalised on Arsenal’s sloppy performance, Arsenal struck late on to rescue a point. Arsenal currently sit in 12th place in the Premier League with lot’s of work needed to be done.

When looking at the bottom of the table there are a few teams that could be in big trouble this season based of their starts to their campaigns. Burnley, Newcastle and Norwich are currently sitting in the bottom three in the Premier League. All the teams in the bottom three have not managed a win so far this season. Norwich who have become a yoyo club sit rock bottom on 2 points with Newcastle and Burnley just above on 3 points.

In my opinion I think that these three teams will be relegated come the end of the season. The one team that won’t be feeling too nervous being in the bottom three at this stage is Newcastle United as their season is potentially going to take a massive turn due to the billion pound takeover. The January transfer window will be an exciting one to see who they recruit in this massive re-build.

Ronaldo Returns! Old Trafford is rocking once again

Ronaldo at Manchester United Old Trafford Hospitality

Manchester United have brought back serial winner Cristiano Ronaldo to reinforce their hopes of challenging for Premier League and European glory. After the decline of the club in recent years and fans getting irritated by the lack of ambition and most importantly silverware at the club, are Manchester United now in a position to put that all behind them?

Ronaldo’s impact is already apparent

The Transfer window always promises excitement, confusion and most of all promise, however no-one could have expected a summer window like 2021. Most notably, the return of Cristiano Ronaldo to Old Trafford.

After a strong start to their Premier League campaign with wins over Wolverhampton Wanderers, Leeds and a heavily contested draw away at Southampton, the stage was set for an enthralling fixture against Newcastle at Old Trafford.

Saturday 11th September was the day football fans all over the world were anticipating, the question on the lips of everyone was, will Ronaldo play a part? In true Ronaldo style he played a pivotal role in a thrashing of lacklustre Newcastle United.

Ronaldo started the game brimming with confidence. As a tame first half was ending, Cristiano pounced onto a lose ball and fired home minutes before the referee blew his whistle on the first half. All eyes were on Ronaldo as the second half got underway. However, shortly after the break Javier Manquillo slotted the ball past a helpless De Gea to level for Newcastle who were looking to crash the return of Manchester United’s prodigal son.

The score line only remained level for 6 minutes after the ball was fired home by, yes you guessed it, Cristiano Ronaldo. Old Trafford erupted as the Portuguese phenomenon wheeled away in celebration with his Manchester United teammates. The pattern continued throughout the 90 minutes with Ronaldo’s Portuguese compatriot Bruno Fernandes scoring a wonderful goal with Jesse Lingard sealing a 4-1 win with a tidy finish.

With the addition of Ronaldo, the question now being asked is can Manchester United win the Premier league? Many believe already that this is a big possibility. In my opinion they are more than capable with this side. If Ronaldo can stay consistent this season, stay fit and provide Manchester United with goals, assists and his winning mentality they surely will be in the running to lift the Premier League trophy come May. Cristiano’s affiliation with the club has never really died after his departure to Real Madrid. Recently speaking, he stated that the United fans saw him grow up from 18 years old and what a journey he has been on since then.

Can Solskjaer have the Ferguson effect?

Throughout his career, Cristiano has had many influences and world class managers, however none quite like Manchester United great, Sir Alex Ferguson. Sir Alex was a big factor in bringing Ronaldo back to M16. Times have changed since then and the man in charge is ex Manchester United forward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, nicknamed the baby-faced assassin for his youthful face and his killer instinct in front of goal. With Ole stepping in as manager at United many were sceptical, rightly so after Ferguson’s departure and a string of unsuccessful managers the boots to fill were big. After his first couple of seasons, many Manchester United supporters were unimpressed and after last year’s Europa League final defeat to Villareal the pressure on Solskjaer has mounted.

With the addition of Ronaldo expectations have risen, only adding more pressure on the manager to stock the trophy cabinet which has been lacking in recent years. As a football manager you are solely defined on results, you can have the best team in the world and the greatest players, if you’re not winning football matches or in United’s case winning trophies your time as manager will be short lived. It is vital that Ole and Manchester United succeed this season or it could well be his last.

What can United achieve with Ronaldo this season?

My opinion on the signing of Ronaldo is firstly, what a bargain. For one of the worlds greatest footballers to be sold so cheap, even at his age is intriguing. His ability is undisputed, and I really feel like he has the capability to push United to the next level and get them back on the pedestal where they rightly belong and have been in previous years. I think the Premier League will be tightly contested this season with either Manchester United or Chelsea taking the top spot.

In terms of Champions League success, I believe Manchester United will progress to the later rounds but I don’t feel they have the recent experience of going the distance. After a turbulent start to their Champions League campaign and with a disappointing loss to Young Boys, Manchester United will look to rectify that against the team that beat them in the Europa League final, Villareal.
